Why is the asteroid belt shaped like a ring, wouldn't an asteroid cloud be more right than a ring?

It is believed that the "Asteroid Belt" was created by the explosion of a planet that was once in orbit around the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. When the planet exploded, the fragments (the asteroids) continued their rotation about the Sun.
